Based on a December 2020 ProPublica posting, by 2017 the federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), in discussion with then Attorney Normal Jeff Classes, had started to look for suppliers of pentobarbital to be used in lethal injections. The BOP was conscious that the usage of pentobarbital as their "new drug alternative" could well be challenged during the
